During our rest day at Porto we decided to follow the coastal path for one day. We left Porto in the fog. For this reason, we walked over 2 hours without seeing anything of the coast! At the end of this long but absolutely beautiful day we had already forgotten about the fog! A beach walk of 36 km long! And people say I'm not romantic. On the contrary, i have proven differently! We were less fortunate when arriving at our destination, Vila do Conde, the place was packed. They had only 2 beds available at the Albergue. For 5 of us not enough. We walked with 3 other pilgrims. We called other hostels and hotels but everything was fully booked!! Marc got one of the two beds that were left in the hostel and I had to sleep on the floor on a mat! That's not so bad. With 36 km in ones legs one does not need much, but if there are 6 'snores' in the same room, then it is just 'game over' . In order not to commit a murder I took my sleeping bag and went to sleep in the hallway. There I could not only hear the snores of my own bedroom, but also those of the other 3 rooms. What a night !!!
After Porto we walk longer distances. The options for accommodation are limited. We are also surprised by the number of people doing this camino. To make sure we have a place to sleep we have to make reservations This is a pity as you lose flexibility. We have been told in Barcelos that May and September are the months with the most pilgrims between Porto and Santiago. In September there are 60% more people than in August.
Marc has finally been able to try the famous cream cakes(pastels de nata) from Barcelos. During this camino he has carried out a thorough investigation on this delicacy: he has had one every day.
Yesterday a 70 year old American lady fell! She is walking with us from O Porto, together with a girl from Belgium and another from Italy. During a descent, she lost her balance and there she went! Here face met the rocks! As we were walking in front of her we did not see the fall. Just near the hostel we realized that it was taking her long time to arrive. She walks most of the time at our pace or sometimes even faster. I hope to be able to move in the same way at age 70. Fortunately, she only has a wound and 8 stitches. And today back she was on the road with us: 28km!
This morning along with the entrance into Galicia by Tui, the border Portugal / Spain the first raindrops arrived as well on this Camino. This always happens when we enter Galicia. Someone told us that Galicia cries when she sees that two of her children come home. Could this really be?
Tomorrow we will start walking the last 100 km💯 💪🏼
